Congratulations to my dear friends, Lish and Levi for tying the knot! I wish you every happiness together. And I send kudos for interpretating the age-old institution of marriage on your own terms.
What Lish and Levi decided to do was get married in their 40s, despite no obvious need to do so. He has been happily unmarried since a long ago engagement was derailed by planning the wedding, and her first marriage was barely more than a technicality–neither scenario worth repeating. They don’t want children or a wedding. Both are US citizens. Their families don’t meddle or apply pressure. And they live together happily in Maui.
Lish and Levi decided to adapt marriage to their need as a couple to deepen their partnership and take it another level, where their love contract became a legal one. And there is something sociological about being 50 with a boyfriend versus being 50 with a husband. Maybe the one true benefit of marriage in modern times comes down to respect, both from each other and society.
Again, congratulations L+L for your courage to be post-modern by taking what works for you and leaving the rest.
