All the beaches in Kihei, Maui, were closed following the major storm that drenched the island on December 3, 2007. Cleanup crews from the County have been hard at work for the past two weeks removing debris, fallen trees and keawe thorns from the beach parks. All beaches in Kihei have reopened. The only exception is windsurfing beach. It remains closed. No announcements have been made when it will reopen.
To beach goers planning winter holidays in South Maui, the beach openings are good news. More good news is that the storm has passed and the weather is back to the normal tradewind pattern. However, all of the sunshine has not brought back the sand–most of which washed away in the storm. While the parks are open, they are not what they used to be.
